In this tutorial, you will learn how to change you computer’s mac address in windows PC.  The MAC address (Media Access Control address) is a unique identifier which is used to identify your computer in a network. Changing it can help you diagnose network issues, or just have a little fun with a silly name. If you are blocked in a wireless network for some reason, they use your mac address to block your connection. So to connect to the wireless network you may change your Mac address which will allow you to connect to the network. You may use the same Mac address of other persons. It is called Mac address spoofing.

Example for a MAC Address

To change your Mac address, there are several ways you could use. There is an option to do it manually or by using third party applications. Some methods are given below in this tutorial. I will be using a Windows 8.1 PC to demonstrate the steps involved. All these methods may work with windows 7/8/8.1.

First of all you may check your default Mac address for each network adapter by using the command prompt. To check the Mac address open a Command prompt window and enter the following command.

getmac

Initial

After using this command, you will get the Mac address for each adapter and also whether it is connected or not. You may note down the default Mac address to know get the proof for the changing of Mac address.

Method 1: Only for Ethernet adapter

  • This method only works with an Ethernet adapter. For a wireless network adapter skip to the next method (Method 2).
  • Open Network and Sharing Center and click on Change adapter Settings.

set

  • Right click and open Properties of the Ethernet adapter.

prop

  • A new windows will pop up. Now click on Configure…

config

  • Now the window to configure the device settings will be there. Click on Advanced Settings tab.

advanced

  • There will be a list of things that we could configure. Now click on Network Address on this list.
  • At first there will be no values given. Now you could give a custom Mac address in the box provided. Mac addresses are 12-digit values, and should be entered without any dashes or colons. For example, if you want to make the MAC address “2A:1B:4C:3D:6E:5F”, you would enter “2A1B4C3D6E5F”.

ethernet value

  • Now press OK, and the device will disable and re-enable automatically. You just created a custom Mac address for the Ethernet adapter.

ether done

  • This method will not work with a wireless adapter because there will be no registry entry for it by default. So let’s move to the next method.

Method 2

  • For a wireless adapter there will be no registry string value for the Network Address. So we could create this using this method. You may use this method also for the Ethernet adapter.
  • First you need to connect to a network using network adapter for which we are going to give a new Mac address.
  • Open a command prompt window type the following command.

getmac

  • Copy down the GUID, which is displayed between the “{}” brackets next to the Mac address.

guid

  • Open a Run windows by using Winkey + R. Type regedit and hit enter.

run

  • In the Registry Editor expand the folder to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM

path

  • Now press Ctrl + F and find the GUID that we copied earlier.

find

  • The string will be shown after searching for it. Now create a new String Value inside the same folder.

new string

  • Name the new string value as NetworkAddress. Double click on the new string.

rename

  • Now you could give the desired Mac address in the Value data for the new string value created. You should separate each 2 character/digit using a hyphen (-). Press OK, and close the Registry editor.

string value given

  • To change the Mac address, now you should restart the wireless adapter. To do it, go to Network and Sharing Center >> Change adapter Settings. Now disable and re-enable the wireless adapter.
disable

Disable

enable

Enable

  • Now the Mac address will be changed. To see the difference, you may use the command prompt.

final

  • You just got the idea to change the Mac address of a particular adapter in Windows PC.
